How do they triumph? They triumph because they die for Christ. They die for Christ, not only without knowing Him, but even without knowing that they were dying for Him. They are killed for Christ, who is not yet able to speak, that He might make them His martyrs. For He is in the flesh, and they are in the flesh. Herod, when he was disturbed by the Magi who came to Jerusalem, and heard that a king was born there who would be greater than himself, he became angry and ordered that all the children in Bethlehem and all its territory, from two years old and under, be put to death, according to the time which he had carefully ascertained from the Magi.
This is what the Gospel tells us: "Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had carefully ascertained from the wise men." (Matthew 2:16)
What did the Magi say? "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." (Matthew 2:2)
Herod, hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" (Matthew 2:4-6)
